Title A name given to the resource Uña de Gato : Fate and future peruvian forest resource Description An account of the resource Uncaria tomentosa and U. guíanensis have been important in traditional healing in many South American countries. These species contain some sixty active substances which are widely tested for possible medical treatments. U. tomentosa has been traded from Peru until it reached a peak export of 726 tonnes in 1996. Government agencies and private companies have dedicated considerable efforts in trying to enhance production and sales of these species. At the national level, there has been pressure put on the government to allow legislation to prohibit the sales of the raw material of these species to capture larger shares of benefits for the national economy. Initially false conservation arguments were used as there is sufficient evidence to argue that at current harvesting levels there is no threat to the two species. Regional government agencies have promoted the production of the two species without having a clear picture of future demand, allowing the possibility that much of the future production will not have any demand. Both actions may possibly negatively affect the benefits that accrue to local collectors or producers. // Uncaria tomentosa y U. guíanensis han sido importantes en la medicina tradicional de países sudamericanos. Estas especies contienen alrededor de sesenta sustancias activas que se han probado ampliamente para posibles tratamientos médicos. U. tomentosa se ha comercializado en Perú hasta alcanzar un pico de exportación de 726 toneladas en 1996. Organismos gubernamentales y empresas privadas han dedicado considerables esfuerzos a intentar mejorar la producción y las ventas de estas especies. A nivel nacional, se ha presionado al gobierno para que permita una legislación que prohíba la venta de la materia prima de estas especies para obtener una mayor proporción de beneficios para la economía nacional. Inicialmente, se utilizaron falsos argumentos de conservación, ya que existe suficiente evidencia para argumentar que, con los niveles actuales de extracción, no existe amenaza para ambas especies. Organismos regionales han promovido la producción de ambas especies sin tener una visión clara de la demanda futura, lo que genera la posibilidad de que gran parte de la producción futura no tenga demanda. Ambas acciones podrían afectar negativamente los beneficios que obtienen los recolectores o productores locales.
