El origen de esta novela fue una monografía que el autor presentó en la Universidad de San Marcos para aprobar el curso de Geografía Humana, hacia 1929. El argumento toma forma a partir de una expedición que este autor realiza de joven al corazón de la selva virgen en busca de cauchales. Sangama es un curandero poseedor de múltiples habilidades, con quien se relaciona el joven Abel Barcas, el narrador de la historia. Importante referencia a la flora y la fauna, en especial a la anaconda y a un mito andino incaísta.</text>
