"Mientras la esfera temporal se beneficiaba de la castellanización de los indios nobles conversos, la esfera espiritual requería que los frailes aprendieran náhuatl para verificar la correcta transmisión del mensaje cristiano. En 1535 Carlos V impulsó la figura de los Colegios que tendrían la orden de formar a los hijos de los caciques indios en las buenas costumbres cristianas y en la lengua castellana. Simultáneamente, los frailes encontrarían en los Colegios un espacio para estudiar sistemáticamente las lenguas indígenas. // Los intereses de las esferas espiritual y temporal se reflejaron en la fundación del Colegio de Tlatelolco en 1536, bajo el impulso del obispo Juan de Zumárraga y del virrey Antonio de Mendoza. El obispo Zumárraga tenía la aspiración de que los nahuas cristianizados tomaran un compromiso activo con el proceso de evangelización.
