Fuentes históricas del primer siglo colonial hacen posible al autor desentrañar los símbolos de la autoridad [en el plano ritual], definir sus atributos y también sus atribuciones. Las autoridades andinas virreinales fueron definidas bajo patrones europeos pero adaptados al nuevo entorno; por ejemplo, se las pensó no sólo hereditarias en un extremo, sino nominadas por el inca en el otro.
