Esta utilización se coloca al lado de otras prácticas de tipo adivinatorio realizadas por medio de otros elementos, como es el caso del cuy [conejillo de Indias], del huevo de gallina o del esputo humano. Todas estas prácticas están dirigidas por operadores de tipo chamánico, dándose también casos de especialistas en la sola adivinación. De cual­quier manera, disponemos de algunos estudios sobre el papel desempeñado por estas figuras, las cuales participan totalmente del status chamánico, coinci­diendo su elección y formación con la de los chamanes quechuas dedicados a la curación de enfer­medades o a la mediación con espíritus tutelares o de otro tipo [por ejemplo, los altomisayoq]. Aunque disponemos de estudios sobre el papel jugado por la coca en las prácticas adivinatorias de los quechuas, permanece sin aclarar completamente el sistema de interpretación utilizado para relacionar los eventos y las hojas de coca y, más todavía, no se ha aclarado por qué la coca y no otra planta ha sido esco­gida para la adivinación. El problema no es de poca monta, ya que la determinación del origen del valor atribuido a la coca puede también explicar algunos importantes elementos del sistema de adivinación.
