Los nonuya fueron un pueblo numeroso, casi exterminado durante el período cauchero a principios del siglo xx. Otros grupos vecinos lograron retornar a su territorio ancestral después del éxodo cauchero. Solo dos hombres nonuya retornaron y se casaron con mujeres de otros grupos. Sus descendientes (cerca de 100 personas) perdieron su lengua paterna y adoptaron la lengua de otros grupos [muinane y andoque]. Desde 1992, este grupo decidió reafirmar su identidad y formó una nueva comunidad [en contacto con últimos hablantes de la lengua en el lado peruano].
